SB2C-5 1,560, production ending in October 1945 USN VJ Day cancellations, each entry is a different contract The fact that the preference for the AD says slot about the shifting attitude within the Navy especially with jets and tactical nukes coming into the picture. Even allowing for the post war slowdown that schedule was not going to be hugely advanced. The XBT2D-1 (AKA the prototype Skyraider) didn’t fly until March 1945 and the first production aircraft weren’t delivered until Dec 1946. Look at the numbers that were cancelled at the end of the war - 2,500. That was made easier by the SB2C being re-qualified for torpedo dropping in 1945. The aircraft being eliminated was the TBM Avenger torpedo bomber. The larger CVB Midway class were planned to have 50% F4U Corsairs and 50% SB2C in their c130 plane air groups. Medium term OK.īy mid-1945 the equipment programme for their carrier air groups on the Essex class was to increase the numbers of SB2C dive bombers at the expense of fighters and then torpedo bombers. I think it is an overstatement to say that in 1945 the USN was “done with the classic two seat dive bombers”. Only 2 cannon in the wings of the SB2C-5. Any help on these questions would be much appreciated. I do have the really old Monogram kit that has the unframed canopy which will do in a pinch but that might make the plane out of proper date. Does anyone know when the unframed canopies went onto production aircraft? Was this a post war addition? Was the change made on the -4 models? The reason for this particular inquiry has to do with the fact that the framed pilots canopy in one of the kits is cracked and broken and finding a replacement is almost impossible. On the earlier models the canopy is framed whereas the late model Helldivers had unframed canopies. I assume that the early model Helldivers did not get the perforated version? My other question is in regard to the pilots canopy. The PE dive breaks are solid and not perforated for the AM kit whereas the dive breaks for the Pro Modeler are perforated. ![]() I have a Monogram Pro Modeler 1/48 Sb2c-4 kit and the AM -1c kit. I have a couple of questions regarding the Helldiver. ![]()
